WOLFGANG GOLLER ALBERT
Es con enorme satisfacción que he aceptado
el pedido de redactar éste recordatorio al Dr.
Wolfgang Goller, a casi 2 años de su
fallecimiento. Ello se debe al reconocimiento
de los méritos profesionales de Wolfgang,
los que de por sí harían la tarea sumamente
fácil. Pero más significativo aún es el cariño
que se supo ganar entre aquellos que lo
conocimos y compartimos con él horas de
trabajo, estudio o recreación, y dentro de
éste grupo me siento particularmente
halagado por la amistad que nos brindamos
mutuamente.
El Dr. Goller nació el 12 de febrero de 1928. Realizó sus estudios en Montevideo, habiendo elegido por vocación
innegable, la carrera de Doctor en Medicina, graduándose en nuestra Facultad el 10 de junio de 1959.
Con clara orientación hacia la actividad quirúrgica, obtiene el título de Cirujano General el 1 de junio de 1963. Ya
desde esa época, siente un particular interés por la patología cardio vascular y su tratamiento. Esto lo lleva a viajar a
Europa, donde realizó cursos de especialización y pasantías en destacados centros de Suiza y Alemania. En 1963
realizó Cirugía Cardiaca en la Clínica Quirúrgica Universitaria de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Zurich
(Suiza), con el Prof. Dr. A. Senning, a quien frecuentemente recordaba por su elevada calidad docente.
En los años 1964 a 1966, estuvo en la Clínica Quirúrgica del Hospital de Heilbronn, y en la Clínica Angiológica del
Hospital de la ciudad de Itzehoe, ambos en Alemania.
Vuelve de allí a nuestro País, siendo uno de los pioneros de la cirugía cardio vascular en nuestro medio.
Comienza a trabajar como cirujano general y torácico en la órbita del Ministerio de Salud Pública, institución en la
que ya se había desempeñado como Practicante Externo en los años 1952 y 1953 y luego como Practicante Interno
desde 1955 a 1959.
A partir de 1970, comienza una intensa carrera docente en la Facultad de Medicina. Así, a lo largo de varios años de
actividad, transitó desde el cargo de Docente Auxiliar de Clínica Quirúrgica y del Departamento de Anatomía hasta
los de Profesor Agregado Titular de Anatomía, de Clínica Quirúrgica, y del Departamento de Cirugía Cardiaca del
Hospital de Clínicas.
En el año 1979, llegó a ocupar transitoriamente el cargo de Director de la Clínica Quirúrgica A.
Su permanente deseo de superación le hizo mantener un relacionamiento con centros asistenciales extranjeros, que
lo llevaron a realizar en el año 1971 una pasantía por las Universidades de Ulm, de Dusseldorf y la Clínica de
Enfermedades Vasculares de Engelkirchen, en Alemania. En 1981 visitó el Servicio de Cirugía Cardiaca de la Clínica
Mayo, donde entabló amistad con el Dr. Francisco J. Puga.

Esta trayectoria laboral se vio complementada con su participación en numerosos congresos, simposios, cursos,
jornadas, etc., tanto a nivel nacional como en el extranjero, siendo invitado especial en múltiples oportunidades.
También integró decenas de tribunales de concursos, así como de monografías y tesis de doctorado.
Su producción científica fue permanente, abarcando las tres áreas a las que dedicó su actividad profesional: la
Anatomía, la Cirugía General y la Cirugía Cardiovascular. Más de 120 trabajos publicados – 2 de ellos ganadores de
primeros premios -, una Tesis de Doctorado y una Tesis de Profesorado (ambas calificadas con sobresaliente), dan
prueba de ello.
Participó de varias organizaciones científicas: la Sociedad de Cirugía del Uruguay, la Sociedad Uruguaya de
Cardiología, la Sociedad de Angiología del Uruguay, la Sociedad Rioplatense de Anatomía, la Pan American
Association of Anatomy, y el Capítulo Latinoamericano de la International Cardiovascular Society.
Hemos querido señalar aparte, su actividad en el Hospital Central de las Fuerzas Armadas, que fue donde lo
conocimos profundamente, donde compartimos muchas horas y donde cultivamos una sincera amistad.
En el Hospital Militar, Wolfgang (o como le decíamos los amigos: Wolf o Alemán), constituyó un hito en la historia de
la Institución. Cirujano de muy buena formación general y conocedor detallado de la anatomía, se caracterizó por su
actitud siempre serena aún en los momentos más difíciles de un acto quirúrgico, poseedor de una excelente
habilidad manual, y de un claro criterio en las conductas a adoptar.
No solamente fue el pionero de la cirugía vascular; también enseñó a todos los integrantes del Servicio de Cirugía
General, iniciando una verdadera escuela que continuaron luego varios de sus discípulos. Siempre fue
absolutamente generoso, tanto al compartir sus conocimientos y experiencias, como también en la actividad
quirúrgica en sí, dándole oportunidad a todos los cirujanos de participar en las intervenciones, de acuerdo al nivel de
formación por cada uno alcanzado, y siempre acompañando su gesto bondadoso con una palabra de aprobación y
aliento a la tarea realizada por sus colaboradores.
Compartió su actividad profesional con un hobby al que dedicó tiempo y entusiasmo. Hábil jinete, tuvo en la
equitación una de sus pasiones. Hasta casi las últimas etapas de su vida, seguía concurriendo a su Carrasco Polo
Club, para jinetear un rato.
Wolf enviudó hacia fines de la década del 70, teniendo en ese momento tres hijos: Alfredo, Claudia y Patricia. Pero
reconstituyó su familia casándose nuevamente y teniendo de éste segundo matrimonio a su hija Bettina.
Lamentablemente en los últimos años de su vida tuvo que vivir alguna situación familiar angustiante, pero fue capaz
de superarla gracias a su personalidad fundamentalmente optimista y al apoyo de su esposa Ana.
El 8 de junio de 2005 fallece mientras dormía. La noticia fue un tremendo shock para todos los que lo conocimos y lo
quisimos. Pero sabemos que Wolf solamente dejó el cuerpo físico que lo acompañó en ésta etapa de su vida, y que
su espíritu se encuentra en otro plano, donde continua prodigando esas dotes personales que hemos sabido
apreciar y valorar en él. Desde ahí, y si nos estás mirando y escuchando, recibe nuestro fraterno abrazo, con todo el
cariño y amistad que tú te supiste granjear.
A su familia, a sus amigos, a sus camaradas, a sus alumnos, les decimos que hemos dejado de tener junto a
nosotros a un entrañable compañero. Recordémoslo siempre con todas sus virtudes, y practiquemos en nuestras
vidas la bonhomía que el supo prodigar.

His constant feeling of progress drove him to be related with
foreign welfare centers, which took him , in 1971, to perform
a training at the Ulm Colleges, of Dusseldorf and the
Vascular Diseases Clinic, in Germany. In 1981 he visited the
service of Cardiac Surgery of the Mayo Clinic, where he
began a friendship with Dr. Francisco J. Puga.
It is with enormous satisfaction that I have accepted the
order of writing this article about Dr. Wolfgang Goller, almost
two years after his death. It is due to the recognition of his
professional merits. But, still more significant, is the fondness
that he knew how to get from those that knew him and
shared hours of job, study or just free time, and inside this
group, I feel flattered because of the friendship that we
mutually gave.
This labor development was complemented with his
participation in many conventions, simposiums, courses,
etc., in the national level as well as in the abroad, being a
special guest in multiple opportunities.
Dr. Goller was born on 12th February of 1928. He performed
his studies in Montevideo, choosing the career of Doctor in
Medicine, graduating himself in our college the 10th of June
of 1959.
He also was a part of dozens of boards of examiners, as well
as monographs and dissertation of doctorate.
His scientist production was permanent, reaching the three
areas to which he dedicated his professional activity:
Anatomy, General Surgeon and Cardiovascular Surgery.
More than 120 published tasks – 2 of them winners of first
prizes -, a Doctorate Dissertation and a Professorship
Dissertation (both excellent rated), give test of it.
With a straight orientation to the surgical activity, he gets the
General Surgeon degree the 1st of June of 1963. Already
from that time, he feels interested about the cardio vascular
pathology and its treatment. This makes him travel to
Europe, where he performed courses of specialization at
important medical centers of Swizz and Germany. In 1963
he studied cardiac surgery at the Surgical University Clinic of
the Medicine College from Zurich University (Swizz), with
Professor Dr. A. Senning, whom was reminded by Goller
frequently for his high teaching quality.
He was a part of many scientist organizations: Uruguayan
Surgical Society, Uruguayan Society of Cardiology,
Uruguayan Vascular Anatomy Society, PanAmerican
Association of Anatomy, and the Latinamerican Chapter of
the International Cardiovascular Society.
From 1964 to 1966, he was in the Surgical Clinic of the
Heilbronn Hospital, and in the Clinic of vascular anatomy of
the Itzeboe Hospital, both in Germany.
We wanted to point out his activity at the Armed Forces
Central Hospital, where we deeply knew him, shared a lot of
hours and where we raised a sincere friend ship.
Then, he comes back to our country, being one of the
pioneers of the cardio vascular anatomy in our ambience.
In the Military Hospital, Wolfgang (or, as the friends used to
call him: Wolf or German), constituted a milestone in the
history of the Institution, Surgeon of an excellent general
formation and detailed connoisseur of the anatomy, he was
characterized by his always calm attitude, even in the
hardest moments of a surgical act, owner of an excellent
manual skill, and a clear discernment in the conducts to
adopt.
He starts to work as a general and thoracic surgeon in the
orbit of the Public Health Ministry, where he used to act as a
external practitioner in the years 1952 and 1953, and then as
internal practitioner from 1955 to 1959.
From 1970, he starts an intensive teaching career at the
Medicine College. Through many years of activity, he went
from the duty ox Auxiliary Professor of Surgical Clinic and of
the Anatomy Department, to the charge of Aggregate
Professor of Anatomy, of Surgical Clinic, and of the
Department of Cardiac Surgery of the Clinics Hospital.
He was not just the pioneer of the vascular surgery, he also
taught to all the staff of the service of General Surgery,
starting a real school, that then it was continued by many of
his disciples. He was always absolutely generous, sharing
his knowledges and experiences, as also in the surgical
activity, giving to every surgeon the opportunity to take part
in the interventions, according to the formation level reached

for each one, and always attaching his kind attitude with an
approval word performed by his collaborators.
He shared his professional activity with a hobby to which he
dedicated time and enthusiasm. Skillful rider, found in horse
riding one of his passions. Even until the last stages of his
life, he used to go to his Carrasco Polo Club, to ride for a
while.
His wife died at the ends of the decade of 70, having at that
time three children: Alfredo, Claudia y Patricia. But he re-
constituted his family getting marrying again and having
Bettina, his daughter of this second marriage.
Regrettably, in the last years of his life, he had to go through
some familiar sad situation, but he was capable of
overcoming it thanks to his optimistic personality and the
support of his wife Ana.
The 8th of June of 2005 he died while he was sleeping. That
news was a huge shock for everyone that knew and liked
him. But we know that Wolf only left his body, and that his
spirit is now in other space, where continues lavishing those
gifts that we learned to appreciate in him. If you are hearing
and looking at us, receive our fraternal hug, with all the
fondness and friendship that you could obtain.
To his family, friends, partners, pupils, we say that we have
stopped having between us an affectionate partner. Let’s
remember him for ever with all of his virtues, and practice in
our lives the kindheartedness that he knew how to lavish.
We will always remember you Wolfgang !.
