NUEVA ORIENTACION DE LA
INFORMACION BIBLIOTECA BIOMEDICA
DE LA D.N.S.FF.AA

Si representáramos al conocimiento como una escalera, sus peldaños estarían formados por la información. El
conocimiento científico no escapa a esta realidad, sino que, por el contrario, es sumamente sensible a la calidad de
la información que se maneja. Podríamos decir, continuando con el ejemplo anterior, que es una escalera
sumamente empinada y de escalones muy estrechos.
Las ciencias relacionadas con la Salud Humana y, particularmente la Ciencia Médica, han vivido en los últimos 50
años un avance tan desmesurado que hoy resulta imposible, para un solo individuo, abarcar la totalidad de sus
contenidos, lo que ha constituido un aumento en la cantidad de la Información.
Concomitantemente, ha habido un cambio en la calidad de la información, fundamentalmente debido a su forma de
presentación. Este cambio cualitativo ha sido impulsado básicamente por la Informática y, particularmente, por las
redes mundiales de información como la Internet. Éstas constituyen una gran biblioteca donde se vierte el resultado
de la investigación y las revisiones sistemáticas que ponen al día temas de interés.
De todos modos, solo parte de su contenido es de libre acceso, aunque esta porción irrestricta nos permite saber
que es lo que se está investigando en otras partes del mundo y acceder a los resúmenes de los trabajos en la
mayoría de los casos.
Esta revolución de la información ha tenido, entre otras, tres grandes consecuencias para las ciencias de la salud.
1) Posibilitar la obtención, navegando en la gran red de la información globalizada, de elementos de juicio que
permitan responder a las interrogantes surgidas en la práctica diaria.
2) Consolidar el desarrollo de la Medicina basada en la evidencia científica.
3) Generar la creación de comités de revisiones sistemáticas en el seno de las Sociedades Científicas, para poder
seleccionar y resumir, la avasallante cantidad de información que se genera diariamente.
Enfrentados a este desafío, hemos propuesto un cambio de orientación de la Biblioteca Biomédica, surgido de la
clara necesidad de acceder a los estantes de esta enorme biblioteca virtual y hacerlo en forma eficaz y eficiente,
pretendiendo no sólo lograr un acceso a la información de dominio público, sino a una parte seleccionada de la
información restringida.
Para lograr satisfacer estas necesidades, estamos realizando una reorientación del gasto, que hasta este momento
se concentraba en la adquisición de material impreso, comenzando a invertir en la compra de equipos informáticos
modernos y la optimización de la conexión a Internet. Asimismo, se procurará obtener suscripción a una biblioteca
virtual que permita acceder a libros y revistas a texto completo, cumpliendo así con los requerimientos mínimos de
obtención de información actualizada y de calidad.
Se abre, entonces, una nueva perspectiva para los usuarios de la biblioteca biomédica que esperamos les permitirá,
no sólo navegar en la superficie de la red, sino bucear y profundizar en su búsqueda de respuestas, que es en
definitiva, el combustible que mantiene viva la llama del conocimiento científico.

3) To generate the creation of systematic revision
committees within Scientific Societies, to be able to
select and sum up the overwhelming amount of
information which is produced daily.
If we portrayed knowledge as a staircase, its steps
would be formed by information. Scientific knowledge
is no stranger to this reality, but, on the contrary, it is
extremely sensitive to the quality of information
handled. Following the previous example, it could be
said that it is a very steep staircase with very narrow
steps.
Faced to this challenge, we have suggested a change
in the orientation of the Biomedical Library, emerging
from the clear need to access to the shelves of this
huge virtual library, and doing so efficiently and
effectively, we would intend not just to gain access to
public domain information, but also to a selected
portion of restricted information.
Sciences related to Human Health and, particularly
Medical Science, have experienced during the last 50
years such an extreme advance that today it is
impossible for one individual to grasp the whole of its
contents which has meant an increase in the amount
of information.
In order to satisfy these needs, we are carrying out a
reorientation of expenses, which until now were
focused on the purchase of printed material, starting
to invest in modern computers and to optimize the
Internet connection. Likewise, we shall try to
subscribe to a virtual library with access to books and
full text journals, thus fulfilling minimum requirements
to obtain updated and quality information.
Concurrently, there has been a change in the quality
of information, mainly because of its presentation
manner. This qualitative change has been basically
driven by Computer Sciences and particularly by
world information nets such as the Internet. They
comprise a great library where the result from
investigations and systematic reviews are poured,
updating subjects of interest.
Then, it is opened a new perspective for the users of
the biomedical library which we hope shall let them
not just navigate along the surface of the net, but to
dive and deepen their search for answers, that is
actually the fuel keeping the flame of scientific
knowledge aglow.
Anyway, just part of its contents has free access,
although this unrestricted part allows us to know
about what is being investigated in other parts of the
world and get the papers’ summaries in most of the
