Alexitimia como constructor de la personalidad: concepto, clínica, etiología y enfoque terapéutico

El término alexitimia fue acuñado por el Dr. Peter Sifneos (1), psiquiatra de Harvard, para referir a un trastorno de la esfera cognitivo-afectiva que afecta la forma en que las personas experimentan y expresan sus emociones. Las primeras observaciones fueron hechas en pacien- tes con trastornos psicosomáticos, lo que condujo a la creencia errónea de que existía una relación etiológica entre alexitimia y la enfermedad psicosomática. También se ha observado alexitimia en pacientes con patologías tales como dolor psicógeno crónico (2), trastornos por abuso de sustancias (3,4), depresiones enmascaradas (4), perversiones sexuales (5), neurosis de carácter (6) así como asma de riesgo vital (7). Sin embargo, no to- dos los pacientes con patología psicosomática o de otro tipo exhiben características alexitímicas.
