About surgeons in the Royal Army of Chiloé

It proposes a topic that has been openly neglected in the last decades in the local historiography of Chile. This very brief note approaches the subject of health care in a very poor American province: the distant and distinguished island of Chiloé. Isolated in multiple aspects, and confined to the defense of frontiers, the presence of surgeons in the Royal Army at the end of the viceregal period and whose jobs are known through numerous consulted documentation, provides a novel material of study, which is offered here to the interested reader. Unpublished genealogical data of one of the surgeons investigated, the only one with known descendants, is also provided.
