Luis Alberto Torres de la Llosa Beisso was a singular personality in the group of physicians who gave prestige to science in Uruguay since the 19th century. The son of a physician and a passionate naturalist, he practiced both professions. The brotherhood of medical practice with the natural sciences (medicine is one of its branches) has not been strange in Uruguay, beginning in colonial times with Teodoro Miguel Vilardebó (Montevideo, 1803-1856), continuing in the 20th century with Ergasto Cordero (Montevideo, 1890-1951), Carlos Torres de la Llosa (father of the biographer), and Fernando Mañé Garzón (Montevideo, 1925) among others.
