Abstract

Fermín Ferreira (Bahia, Empire of Brazil, 1803 - Montevideo, 1867), residing in Montevideo with his adoptive family, began medical studies in Buenos Aires in 1822, entering the recently installed Department of Medicine of the University. But he had to interrupt them to march as 2nd Surgeon Practitioner in the Republican Army of 1826, where he was stationed in the Eastern Province as captain on August 10 of that year. After the peace agreement with the Empire of Brazil, he returned to the Department of Medicine, being recognized the war years as curricular. He presented the obligatory thesis and took exams. His thesis is not known, but it is certain that it was written. He graduated in Buenos Aires on May 7, 1829 and returned to Montevideo, his place of residence.
He registered his degree years later, on January 16, 1839.
Once the Provisional Government of the Eastern Province was established and the first composition of our army was regulated in 1829 (February 24), Fermín Ferreira was appointed Acting Surgeon Major on December 14, and his title was confirmed on December 7, 1833. In spite of his employment as Surgeon Major of the Army, he did not accompany the Expeditionary Division commanded by Brigadier General Fructuoso Rivera for the extermination of the Charrúa Indians (Salsipuedes, 1831). Ferreira appointed in his place the surgeon Luis Chousiño, assisted by the surgeon of 2nd order Pedro Valverde and the apothecary Enrique Donell.
