Abstract

In 1950, year of the centenary of General José Artigas´ death, the first medical Journal was published by the Health Service General Direction, whose cover had the following title: “Military Health Service Journal”, it showed the emblem of Military Health (a red cross inside a six pointed
star) and it was identified chronologically (Year 1, Nº1, July 1950) and geographically (Montevideo, Uruguay).
Doctor Guillermo Rodríguez Herrero was the Director of this Edition, to whom undoubtedly belonged the first Editorial, titled: “In order to start…”. There, he stated the guiding principles of the Journal: “We intend to fulfil a long standing environmental need to release the first edition of the “Military Health Service Journal”. We shall address subjects related to military medicine and hygiene, pharmacy and dentistry, intending to shed light on some topics or demonstrate new or original aspects”.
Since 1998, the journal has changed its name to a brief “Military Health”. In addition, along its continuous advance, for the first time it is published in two annual editions. And the Service of Scientific Publications of the Armed Forces National Health Direction currently in charge of the actual layout of the Journal has become a part of the new Investigation and Teaching Department.
In this number, on the commemorative page, we have decided to pay our homage to Doctor Fermín Ferreira. For many years he was Surgeon in Chief of the Army and Director of military hospitals during the Guerra Grande (Great War) (1843-1852). Therefore, he must be acknowledged as the pioneer of the current hospital, a fair reason for it to be named after him.
