Uruguayan military personnel have participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1991 in areas of high HIV prevalence, which makes them vulnerable to infection.
A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to determine whether there are differences between the prevalence of HIV infection among military personnel who participated in peacekeeping missions and those who did not during the period 1991-2009.
The infection rate was: 0.1% for military personnel who participated in missions and 0.59% in military personnel who remained in the country, these differences being statistically significant (Pearson's Chi-square <0.01, 99% confidence level).
The importance of education in HIV prevention and the timeliness of determining the infection prior to entering a mission for the health of the infected and the sanitary conditions of the deployment area is emphasized.
