Abstract

General objective: to investigate the place occupied in the hematological consultation by aspects related to the patient's sexuality. Specific objectives: to achieve an integral approach to the patient, in all his bio-psycho-social and emotional aspects and to contribute with the contribution of information on this subject to hematology physicians, through the possibility of referring the patient to a specialist (Sexologist). Introduction: the following work was carried out in a period of 3 months from May 2 to August 31, 2014, applying a survey to Hematologists, Residents and Postgraduates in Hematology who perform their function in different institutions in Montevideo. It is based on identifying shortcomings in the approach to hematology patients in clinical practice, verifying whether they are approached in all their aspects (bio-psycho-social and emotional) beyond their basic pathology, thus improving their quality of life. This in turn offers the hematologist the possibility of referring the patient to a specialist (sexologist). A survey was used as a tool for this study (1), which consists of 20 questions, some of which had to be modified to adapt it to hematologists, since the original study was aimed at cardiologists; 5 questions were eliminated (detailed in the annexes). This research work was carried out at the Hospital Central de las Fuerzas Armadas, the Hospital Universitario de Clínicas Dr. Manuel Quíntela, the Mutualista Médica Uruguaya, and the Asociación Española. Methodology: a survey with a standardized questionnaire (1) of semi-open and multiple-choice questions was made to Hematologists, residents and postgraduates of Hematology from different health care institutions in Montevideo, where issues related to concepts of health and sexual function in the Hematology consultation, as well as the training in sexuality issues of the professionals will be assessed.
