Abstract

Odontogenic tumors are relatively rare and infrequent lesions that can develop an aggressive, destructive and mutilating behavior that can sometimes compromise the patient's life. The growing interest in investigating the origin and development of odontogenic tumors, given their great variety, led the World Health Organization to publish a classification in 2005 that has allowed the use of a universal nomenclature.
By deepening the knowledge of each of the entities that make up odontogenic tumors, differences and similarities between them were observed, establishing better criteria for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan of the same; thus causing the need to establish a new classification. For this reason, in the present year, the World Health Organization published a new classification for head and neck tumors. This paper presents the new classification of odontogenic tumors and compares it with the classification proposed in 2005.
