Dental caries is a worldwide public health problem. The incidence of caries increases with age, leaving sequelae. The Afro-descendant population has the highest levels of poverty, with children and adolescents being more affected. Poverty and indigence are social determinants that increase the risk factors for dental caries.
General objective: To evaluate the dental situation in a sample of the Afro-descendant population living in Montevideo.
Specific objective: To compare the results with those of a sample of individuals of similar sociodemographic conditions and age range who were not of African descent.
Method: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and comparative study in populations of both sexes. The sample included 40 individuals of African descent and 40 non-African descent individuals, with similar socio-demographic characteristics and gender relationship.
Consecutive individuals who met the inclusion criteria: a) being between 15 and 35 years of age, b) residing in Montevideo.
Results: The CPOD index reflects history and present caries in permanent teeth. The results obtained for the Afro-descendant population sample were 5.5 and 10.1 for both age groups (15-24 and 25-35 years). For the non Afro-descendant group 5.3 and 7.9 respectively. The number of missing teeth, except third molars, was 156 in the Afro-descendant group vs. 86 in the non-Afro-descendant group.
teeth in the non Afro-descendant group.
Conclusions: The groups analyzed were similar in almost all variables, although significant differences were found in the number of teeth lost, predominantly in the Afro-descendant group.
