The year 2009 marked the first centenary of the discovery of Chagas disease. Uruguay is the first South American country free of the vinchuca, a hematophagous insect that transmits Chagas disease, a parasitosis endemic in the region caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Since 1997, no transmission of the disease by vinchuca or transfusions has been recorded in Uruguay, in addition to the elimination, officially recognized in 2012 by the health authorities, of the insect vector, Triatoma infestans (vinchuca) throughout Uruguay. The last outbreaks were located in the departments of Tacuarembó, Rivera and Colonia. At the meeting of the Subregional Chagas Disease Initiatives organization held at its headquarters in Buenos Aires, Uruguay received international validation and recognition for being the first country in the region to eliminate the vinchuca bug. Uruguay's representatives received the distinction from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on August 29, 2012. At the summit of technicians from all South American countries, the Minister of Health of Argentina and the PAHO representative in Argentina presented the international recognition to Uruguayan doctors Ciro Ferreira (president of the National Zoonosis Commission) and Julio Sayes (veterinarian and director of the Commission) for the work carried out to eradicate the vinchuca bug. Such precious merit for our country goes back to the compatriot doctor Rodolfo Tálice, who in 1939 identified and described the first case of Chagas Disease or American Trypanosomiasis in Uruguay from the blood of a girl from the interior of the country.
