Abstract

When defining smoking control strategies, it is imperative to keep in mind the true magnitude of smoking as a health risk factor, being responsible for a list of almost 50 types of diseases, including three of the four leading causes of death in our country: cardiovascular diseases, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. The cumulative risk of early death for a smoker is 50% (i.e., one out of every two smokers will die as a result of smoking). Half of these deaths will occur in mid-life, with a loss of 20 to 25 years of life.
