The search for efficiency is a priority goal within Health Systems and is determined by the productivity - quality - cost relationship.
The present work aims at studying the cost of drugs dispensed in the period January - July 2003 in the wards attended by the Unit Dose System (SDMDU) at the H.C.FF.AA.
Two groups of drugs were monitored: a) anti-infectives (due to their technical importance, high cost and prescription volume) b) nine items that cumulatively accounted for 20-30% of the monthly cost of the drugs dispensed.
The results show the global monthly expenditure (GG) (on average $U 1,700,000), that of anti-infectives (approximately 43% of the GG), and for eight defined specialties, the distribution and the cost/bed/day referred to both amounts.
A diagnosis of the situation was made and it was concluded that the revision of the use of the monitored groups will make it possible to rationalize 73% of the expenditure of the SDMDU.
