Abstract

OBJECTIVE The general objective is to study the birth rate at the Central Hospital of the Armed Forces (HCFFAA). The characteristics of newborns, pregnant women and medical care of pregnancy and childbirth are described. DESIGN A descriptive study is carried out, based on a secondary data source. The data were obtained from the Certificate of Live Birth of children registered at the Civil Registry Office No. 12. POPULATION All mothers attended at the maternity ward of the HCFFAA in the period analyzed and their children. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The mothers reside mainly in Montevideo, the average age is 26 years, 66% are married, 71% do not work and the average number of pregnancies is 2.64. Twenty percent are between 14 and 19 years old. The newborns are 51.80% male, the average weight is 3,232 grams and the average gestational age is 38 weeks. Ninety-five percent of the pregnancies have at least one medical check-up, the total number of check-ups is 8.2 on average. Half of the controlled cases have their first check-up at 12 weeks or earlier. 70% are normal deliveries. Cesarean sections account for 22%. CONCLUSIONS In relation to all the data analyzed, the results of the care provided by the HCFFAA are adequate, based on a good level of organization that allows planning future actions to improve those indicators that can still be optimized.
