Ergotism and antiretroviral protease inhibitors

Ergotism is an entity characterized by vasospasms secondary to the ingestion of substances derived from ergot alkaloids (Ergotamine). We present a clinical case of a young patient with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, treated with antiretroviral protease inhibitors, which after self-medication with ergotamins suffered severe ischemia of the lower limbs, requiring admission to the intensive care center. This improved with intravenous vasodilators, achieving discharge to the ward with a virtually complete resolution.
