Breathing is an innate and vital function of the human being. Normal breathing, also called nasal breathing, is one in which air is inhaled and exhaled through the nose, keeping the mouth closed. Naso-respiratory dysfunction, mouth breathing or mixed breathing could cause oral and systemic problems to those who suffer from it, as well as difficulties in their daily life. Mouth breathing constitutes a syndrome called "Mouth Breather Syndrome" which can be diagnosed by obstructive, anatomical or habit causes. The repercussions are varied: the shape of the palate, body balance, speech articulation, type of swallowing, feeding and other functions are altered.
Individual mouth breathers, children or adolescents, may do so because of physical problems or bad habits. All of them develop disorders that are difficult to solve and that affect adult life without a re-education of their naso-respiratory function. The aim of the present study is to provide information that will contribute to the recognition of children and adolescents who are mouth breathers for early referral. Their detection and correction depends on the timely intervention of a multidisciplinary team that includes a pediatrician, otolaryngologist, speech therapist, dentist, orthodontist, orthopedist and other health professions.
