Abstract

It is true that from remote time where combats were fought there were men who made an effort to heal the wounded and that those who took that mission in charge were the comrades in fatigues and dangers of the warriors. Undoubtedly also in all ages there were attempts to ward off the evils of war and to improve the fate of its victims, but they did not go beyond isolated and instinctive attempts, whether by the State or by the charity of individuals. Among Greeks and Romans the feelings of pity and charity, in spite of their high civilization did not exist; those peoples did not have for the human life and its sufferings the respect that in later times began to be lavished. Assistance to the war wounded is a creation of modern times.
