Abstract

The story of a Spaniard born in the region of Andalusia (1782-1850) who wanted a better destiny of Andalusia (1782-1850) who wanted a better destiny than that of a farmer, as his father had been. He was a seminarian in Malaga and a student at the renowned Royal College of Medicine of Cadiz for surgeons and doctors of the Navy from where he graduated after six years of study as a Bachelor of Philosophy. Destiny brought him to the Rio de la Plata, accompanying Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros and settling in the port city of Montevideo. Here he formed a large family, was a renowned physician to the point of being appointed by the Cabildo for the Hospital de Caridad and the Casa de Niños Expósitos; advisor in forensic matters ("City doctor") and author of the first known thesis printed in booklet on the disease transmitted by canids, Rabies. With which he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Buenos Aires. Thus, he can be considered by his documented scientific training and his professional practice as a doctor of academic degree who practiced in Montevideo until the arrival of the oriental Teodoro Miguel Vilardebó.
